Meg! is the creation of Greg Curfman, a father of four who has wanted to be a syndicated cartoonist ever since he first read the Sunday comics on his parents' living room floor. "Having four kids under the age of 12 is a life experience worth writing about," jokes Curfman from his home in Raleigh, N.C. "Meg! gets a little part of her personality from each one of my kids." Along with creating the Meg! comic strip, Curfman writes computer software for IBM and coaches his kids in a soccer league. He holds degrees in marketing and computer science from Christopher Newport University and the College of William and Mary. He is married to his best friend, who also happens to be the daughter of his dentist. Greg Curfman was born in Newport News, Virginia and some of his earliest memories are of lying on his parents' living room floor reading the Sunday comics while waiting to leave for church. He always wanted to be a cartoonist and he spent much of his early years -- and his free time during his freshman year at college -- in the library, reading through old collections and histories of comics. His first submissions were rejected by the syndicates, so being the headstrong youth that he was, he decided he would just do it all himself -- create the feature, run the business end and keep ALL the money himself. Except that there wasn't much money. After about three years he stopped the strip, called Figleaves, and concentrated on finishing his education so he could get a REAL job. He earned his B.S. in Marketing from Christopher Newport University and his M.S. in applied science (computers) from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. He married his best friend Diane (who was also the daughter of his dentist), and got a great job writing software for IBM. But he still wanted to be a cartoonist. Curfman tried to satisfy his yearning for cartooning fame by doing the family Christmas cards and occasional pieces of comic art for friends and colleagues. But after a while it wasn't enough. He found he now had something that he didn't have before -- life experience. Wild, crazy life experience of raising three kids and expecting a fourth. The kind of experience that can't be made up; the kind that HAS to be lived. Now he had something to write about. The Curfmans' first child, Katie, is the inspiration for Meg's strong personality. Their second child, Steven, is the inspiration for Meg's love of sports. Christopher and Jason came along to remind Curfman that no matter how much Katie and Steven taught him, there was always more to learn. Curfman currently coaches Katie in a competitive soccer league while Diane spends much of her time driving Steven to various games for his traveling team. Chris and Jason practice their own scoring celebrations in the family room of the Curfman home in Raleigh, N.C. Now, if he could just talk his wife into getting a dog.
